What is a Vignette?
A vignette is a technique used in photography to draw attention to the center of the frame by darkening the edges. This is usually done by making the edges of the frame darker than the center. Vignettes can also be created in Adobe Photoshop. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a vignette effect in Adobe Photoshop.
Creating a Vignette Effect in Adobe Photoshop
To create a vignette effect in Adobe Photoshop, follow these steps:
- Open Adobe Photoshop and load the image you want to edit.
- Click on the “Edit” menu and select “Transform.”
- Click on the ” Warp” tool.
- Click and drag the corners of the image inward to create a vignette effect.
- Click on the “File” menu and select “Save.”
Tips
Here are some tips that will help you create better vignettes in Adobe Photoshop:
- Try to keep the vignette effect subtle. Too much of a vignette can make an image look unnatural.
- experiment with different transform tools to get the look you want.
- When you’re happy with the vignette effect, click on the “File” menu and select “Save.”
Assuming you have a basic understanding of Photoshop and its tools, let’s get started.
1. Open your image in Photoshop. If you’re starting with a raw file, go ahead and make any basic adjustments (exposure, white balance, etc.) that you feel are necessary.
2. Next, create a new layer by clicking the “Create a new layer” icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
3. Now we’re going to add a vignette effect to this new layer. There are a few ways to do this, but we’re going to use the gradient tool. First, make sure the gradient tool is selected in the toolbar (it should look like a black-and-white gradient). Then, click and drag from the top center of the image towards the bottom center. As you drag, you’ll see the gradient appear.
4. Now we need to invert the gradient layer so that the vignette is darker at the bottom and lighter at the top. To do this, go to “Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Invert.”
5. Finally, we need to change the blending mode of the inverted gradient layer to “Multiply” so that it will darken the underlying image. To do this, go to the Layers panel and change the blending mode of the inverted gradient layer from “Normal” to “Multiply.”
And that’s it! You should now have a nice vignette effect. If you want to make the effect stronger or weaker, you can simply adjust the opacity of the gradient layer.
Creating a Vignette Effect
In Adobe Photoshop, a vignette is a shading or coloring effect that darkens the edges of an image. Vignettes can be used to draw attention to the center of an image or to frame an image in a creative way.
There are many ways to create a vignette effect in Photoshop. In this tutorial, we will show you how to use the Radial Blur tool to create a vignette.
Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop.
Step 2: Duplicate your Background layer. You can do this by going to Layer > Duplicate Layer.
Step 3: Go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. In the Radial Blur dialog box, set the Amount to 10 and the Blur Method to Spin. Click OK.
Step 4: Change the Blend Mode of the Radial Blur layer to Screen.
Step 5: Add a layer mask to the Radial Blur layer.
Step 6: With the layer mask selected, go to Edit > Fill and fill the layer mask with black.
Step 7: Use a white brush to paint over the center of the image. This will reveal the Radial Blur effect and create a vignette.
And that’s it! You have successfully created a vignette effect in Photoshop.
Step 3
Open up the Levels dialog box by going to Image > Adjustments > Levels or by pressing Command/Ctrl + L. In the Levels dialog box, drag the middle slider to the right to increase the contrast. This will make the vignette effect more pronounced.
Step 4
Click on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel to select it.
Step 5
With the layer mask selected, go to Edit > Fill and choose Black from the Contents drop-down menu. This will fill the layer mask with black, which hides the vignette effect.
Step 6
With the layer mask still selected, go to Filter > Render > Clouds. This will add some randomness to the vignette effect.
Step 7
Change the layer blend mode to Multiply. This will darken the edges of the image and make the vignette effect more pronounced.
Step 8
To fine-tune the vignette effect, select the Brush tool and set the Foreground color to white. Paint over the areas where you want to reveal the vignette effect.
How to Create a Vignette Effect in Adobe Photoshop
Create a New Layer
Open your image in Photoshop. Click on the “Create a new layer” icon in the Layers palette, or press Shift+Ctrl+N
(Windows) / Shift+Cmd+N
(Mac).
Fill the Layer with Black
With the new layer selected, press Alt+Backspace
(Windows) / Option+Delete
(Mac) to fill it with the Foreground color (black, by default).
Set the Layer Blending Mode to “Multiply”
With the layer still selected, change the layer’s Blending mode at the top of the Layers palette from the default “Normal” to “Multiply”.
Add a Radial Gradient
Click on the “Add a Radial Gradient” icon in the Options Bar, or press G
to select the Gradient Tool. Then, in the Options Bar, choose the “Radial” gradient type from the drop-down menu.
Next, click anywhere inside the image and drag outwards towards the edge to create the gradient. As you drag, you’ll see the gradient appear in your image. Release your mouse button when the gradient reaches the edge of the photo.
Change the Layer Opacity
If the vignette effect is too strong, you can reduce its opacity by dragging the Opacity slider at the top of the Layers palette towards the left. I usually bring the opacity down to somewhere between 50% and 70%.
And That’s It!
That’s all there is to it! The vignette effect is now complete. If you want, you can experiment with different gradients, layer opacity levels, and even different layer blending modes to see what kinds of results you can achieve.
